Trailer Analysis - The Hobbit

as the film starts there is an establishing shot, this shows the audience a magical place and this will intrigue them from the start. there is also enchanting music which emphasises the feeling of a 'magical' world. there is a narrative which tells the audience briefly about the plot, this is in a deep, wise voice which fits in with the genre of fantasy. this also highlights a link between the film and the book as it quotes phrases that a fan of the book would remember and therefore would want to go and see, this is therefore a unique selling point of the film. its very slow paced at the start of the trailer. There are then jump cuts and it shows clips of Bilbo Baggins so the audience can understand his character more, there are high angle shots which emphasise his small size and there are low angle shots as he looks up to Gandulf, this reinforces his power and authority over Bilbo. the pace then begins to speed up and the colours look more dull and this shows the audience a darker side of fantasy. there are close ups of the different characters faces as they are introduced, fans of the book will recognise these names and they will find it interesting to see how they have been presented in the film, for those who are not fans of the book this just makes them more familiar with some of the characters that will appear throughout the film. whenever a character with authority appears on the screen there is a low angle shot, this help to reiterate their authority. there are more establishing shots and pans when there are large groups together. there are also chants that are stereotypical of an adventure/fantasy film. the name of the film appears about half way through the trailer were the pace begins to increase. The text is dark brown and the background is the map that is used throughout the book and lord of the rings trilogy, this will therefore interest people who have seen previous films and it highlights the link. the chanting beings to get louder and names involved with the film also appear. there are also over the shoulder shots, this shows the relationship or connection between characters. the establishing shots give a chance to show the mystical place and someone who enjoys this genre of film would become excited by the special effects that are used. towards the end of the trailer the pace picks up and the music becomes faster and louder, this makes it more dramatic and remember able. At the end the name of the film appears again in big Gold writing which stands out against the black background, this therefore makes the audience remember the name so they can go and see it. there is then a short clip which again shows the audience the link to the lord of the rings by quoting the famous line 'my precious' this is a unique selling point and people who enjoyed lord of the rings and more likely going to want to go and see the film. at the very end of the clip it shows the release date.
