Certificate Research

There are a range of different film certificates, this shows what age you have to be to watch the film and if you are not old enough you are not allowed to buy rent or watch it in the cinema.
All classification decisions are based on the BBFC’s published and regularly updated Guidelines. The Guidelines are the product of extensive public consultation, research and the accumulated experience of the BBFC over many years. They reflect current views on film, DVD and video game regulation.

Its importaant that we know the different target audience that we are going to focus our film at, i have therefore done certificate research to see the different groups that there are.

It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.
If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.

General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.

Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them.
The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult, and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take a younger child if, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult.
The ‘12’ category exists only for video works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video work.

No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.

No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video work.

Market Research - Action questionnaire

We then did a questionnaire specifically on the genre of action. This is essential as we can find out what people want to see most in an action film. it can also help find our target audience.

The trailer must be effective and most people base whether they are going to go and see the film or not on the trailer. Most people said that they enjoy action. There are different opinions on what people enjoy to see in an action film so we will do our best to appeal to everyone. Due to budget this could cause some problems although we will do the best we can with the low budget we have. Special effects and editing will be very important in making our action trailer.

Market Research - General Questionnaire

We have done a general questionnaire to see what genre of film people enjoy and how this relates to their age and gender. This will help us to find our target audience and age group that we will focus on. We are hoping to do an action film and will therefore do a questionnaire that focuses more on questions related to that afterwards.

Yes - 18 No - 2

It has been very interested to see just how much a trailer influences an audiences decision on whether to go and see a film or not. We have also found out that action is the second most popular film choice, although comedy was first a lot of people were interested in action and our age group was around 16-18, this would therefore be our target audience.

Costume/Prop Ideas

Characters:

Police x3
Bad guys x3
Mum
Dad
Daughter
Members of court

We would like the police to look as real as possible, therefore we would like them to dress in black trousers, smart shirts, either black or white and black shoes. we would also have police hats and badges and would also use fake guns and handcuffs. we could use passports as policeman identification.

we would like the bad guys to be dresses in very casual clothing such as jeans and a plain or vest top.

we would like the mum to be dressed in normal everyday clothes so that the audience can relate to her. we would like her to wear colours such as pink or purple to reinforce vulnerability.

the dad is a lawyer and therefore we would like him to dress smartly and wear a suit. he would also have a brief case with him.

the daughter would wear stereotypical girls clothing, such as a pink dress with flowers, this would show her vulnerability and innocence. she could also have a bear that she carries with her.

we would like the people in court to dress smartly and to be wearing suits or pencil skirts with shirts.

if possible we would also like people to wear court wigs.

Location Research

Locations that are needed:

  • A house
  • An Alleyway or rural car park
  • Room with a table
  • Large building in city
  • A Park
  • Large Hall (court room)
  • Long Corridor

We have two possible houses that we could use. these are easy to get to and we can use them at anytime. This is very useful as we can be more flexable when filming. If we were a high budget film then we would have to be stricter with our schedule. The first scene inside the house has a family around a table. This is also possible in both houses although the house on the right has more space and a larger table, this would work better when filming. The house on the right also looks like a friendly family home and this is the message we want to get across to the audience as this will make them feel more sympathetic towards the family when their daughter is abducted.

this is an alleyway that is right next to my house. this would make it easy to get to and film. Although its a very thin alley and this could cause problems when we are trying to film a fight scene as we would need more space, therefore we could use a rural car park for this instead.

above are pictures of a car park that leads onto an alley way. this would be perfect and we can film the guy being followed down an alley way and then the fight scene in the car park.

we will use an office room for the conversation between the bad guys. this will be a school classroom.

For the scene outside the court room we are thinking about going up to london. this is an extremely busy city and has large buildings, therefore this will be a perfect location. Also as it is a large tourist attraction this will drawn in the audience. London Libary would be a good place to film, as it looks like a grand court building. this also has steps to the side which are needed for this scene. another place that we really like is saint martins palace as it looks like a court rooms and the road is not to busy and there is some parking, which would be helpful for this scene, although we will not be able to gain entrance to the bnuilding and therefore the national portrait gallery would be the better choice.

Ashtead Park

ashtead park is a very good location for us. it is close to where both of us, and the actors and actresses live and furthermore it is not a very busy park and this will be very useful when filming as we dont want the camera to be knocked over or our shots interupted by other people that are in the park. By having the park so close is also helpful as we can return at any point if parts of our film need filming again. Another advantage to using Ashtead park is that the swings are in a large open space which will make it easier to set up the tripod and film the little girl on the swing, this can also give us a larger variety of shots as we can move the camera back allowing a long shot and move forward to use close ups and mid shots.

Action Trailer Analysis - The Amazing Spiderman

The amazing Spiderman is action/adventure/fantasy this film takes Spiderman right back to the beginning therefore there is already a large audience that are familiar with the films and that will be interested in seeing it. this also means that the trailer needs to impress as fans of the previous film would not be happy if it did not live up to expectations.

The trailer starts with an establishing shot of a city and a fade to black, there is music that starts building up in the background, this will build suspense for the audience. There is then a very quick clip of Spiderman; people will recognise this and this will build further excitement for the viewer. There is then a jump cut to a boy standing outside a girls window and she asks him how he got there as she lives high up the building, this gives the audience questions from the start and interreges them. There are lots of fades to black and the music increases in pace but the trailer doesn’t, I really like this as I feel like audience is just waiting for something to happen and for action to begin.

Cross cutting is also used as a way of building tension and there are lots of fades to black, we will defiantly use this in our trailer as it looks really effective. Flashbacks are used and show Spiderman as a child, for followers of previous films this will be really interesting as they will want to find out background information. When there is a flashback it goes to black and white, this shows that it is in the past. We could use this in our trailer. There are intertitles which say ‘his past was kept from him’ these create further questions for the audience. the fades to black continue and the pace of the trailer becomes faster.

There are a lot of special effects used and as we have a low budget we will be limited to what we can do.

At the end the Spiderman symbol appears followed by the title

Action Trailer Analysis - The Avengers

As the trailer starts there is a pan of the city. A deep voice starts talking and telling the audience a little bit about the film, this will grab the audience and get them interested. There is the sound of an alarm going off which will immediately out the audience on the edge of their seats and this is a warning sound letting the audience know that something bad is about to happen.

There are then short clips of the city in turmoil and there are explosions and gun fires. These short clips fade to black and the pace increases slowly. There is a lack of lighting which makes it feel negative and there are long shots as the city begins to be blown up. Straight away the audience will want to know why this has happened and will want to see the film. There are low angle shots which make the super heroes in the film appearing powerful and as though they have authority. We can use this in our action trailer for when we want someone to look intimidating.

There is then a cutaway to comic strips that flash onto the careen, ‘Marvel’ is then shown which would already having a following fan club which will then want to go and see the film, this is a unique selling point. There is a fade to black and it returns to the clip. There are fade to blacks as the pace of the trailer increases, this builds tension for the audience. there are then short clips which let us see the main characters, which are all different superheroes that people will be familiar with, this will therefore already have a large following, each of these has a fade to black and then music starts to increase building suspense. There are jump cuts to explosions, we would not be able to do this as we have a low budget but we will try and create the same effect on a smaller scale.

There is a small section in the middle of the trailer where the pace becomes slower but this tension is then rebuilt again before the final title appears on screen, this keeps the audience interested.

Action Trailer Analysis - A Good Day To Die Hard

As the trailer starts there is an establishing shot allowing the audience to see the helicopters and army trucks, typical of an action film, people that enjoy this genre will straight away be drawn in as the trailer begins. there are people dressed in protective clothing, this makes the audience feel on the edge of their seats as they know something bad is going to happen. there is the sounds of a helicopter in the background, this is a sound associated with war and police and therefore unsettles the audience. there are clips that fade into one another, this makes it slower paced than when the clips fade to black as they then usually change setting whereas this stays in the same place and fade in one after the other. the institution then appears on screen and the pace of the trailer picks up as there are quick fades top black and change in setting. there is music in the background and the sounds of guns being loaded, this conforms to the genre of action and adds excitement for the audience. there are inter titles that appear on after the other which spell out the name of the film, this is effective as it is one of many die hard films and so the audience is more familiar with is and know what is coming. they change the colour of the text when the last two words of the name come up on screen. this highlights these words and lets the audience know that it is related to other die hard movies. this will grab an audience that like these films and they are therefore more likely going to go and see it. 'bruce willis' also appears on the screen which is a selling point of the film. its fast paced with fades to black and short clips of expositions, guns and fights, due to our budget we are limit to how much of this we could use but we could create it in a low budget way. the name then appears again at the end of the trailer, this really makes the audience remember the name of the film and this will help increase the interest. the music builds up as the trailer goes on and then ends quickly when the date appears.

Action Trailer Analysis - Transformers

As the trailer starts there is music in the background that creates tension. There is a close up of the main character so that the audience become familiar with him. as the trailer continues there is a narrative that tells a little bit about the story and the relationship between the main character and the car. there is a long shot that allows the audience to see this. There are fades to black and the tittles appear quickly on the screen and flicker, this adds further tension to the audience. after the titles the music stops and there are jump cuts of different parts of the film, all of these clips fade to black quickly. there are lots of explosions at the begging which tells the audience from the beginning that it is going to be an action film. there are lots of high and low Angle shots which establish authority in the trailer. this allows the audience to know more about the characters. inter titles appear throughout the trailer, showing the audience when the film will be and making them more excited with phrases such as 'most have come to destroy us', 'some have come to protect us' the music builds up again towards the end of the trailer, this adds to the audience excitement of the film and the music becomes more fast paced towards the end, this builds further excitement towards the end, this will grab the audience and make them remember the film. the clips are also very short which adds to the faced paced trailer, this is stereotypical of an action trailer.

Action Trailer Analysis - Mission Impossible 4

As the trailer starts there are small clips that are broken up by fades to black. again like may other action trailers there is a voice that explains the basic plot of the film. at the begging there is a mix of fast paced and slow paced clips, this gets the audience on the edge of their seat. as the trailer goes on the music becomes faster and there is heavy base music which makes the trailer seem very dramatic. the characters are surrounded by nice cars and women and they are smartly dressed. due to the plot of our film we do not thing we will need to show flashy cars and women but the way that the men dress will reflect their character. the bad guys are in basic black clothing showing that they are trouble and that they have a rough interior and exterior, whereas the good guy is in a smart suit showing that he is not just violent but also educated and clever is the way he acts, this is something that we would incorporate in our trailer. the fades to black become longer and text appears say 'this december' this gets people excited about the film and lets them know when it is so they are more likely going to go and see it. there are lots of establishing shots which show action scenes and also the amazing setting that its filmed on, this also interests the audience. there are close ups of the different characters faces which allow the audience to become familiar with the different stereotypes in the film, there are also two shots and over the shoulder shots which further develops the relationships between the characters, this lets the audience know a little bit more and makes them become interested in the plot.

Action Trailer Analysis - Skyfall

As soon as the clip starts its fast paced, there is loud jumpy music which grabs the audiences attention and the clips are short and snappy and there are fades to black used. The institution names then appear and this is a small break for the audience to take it all in. there are the stereotypical cars and gadgets shown in the clip and this is something we could try to incorporate but due to budget we would do this on a smaller scale. as many other trailers the basic plot is described while other clips are shown, this is something that we are looking to do in our trailer. there is fast paced music in the background which add tension for the audience. there is a mix of slow and fast paced clips incorporated in the trailer, this allows the plot to be explained and then shows the action, it also makes the action clips have more of an impact and the make the audience jump and one minuet the audience is calm and next on the edge of their seats. as these faced paced clips are included they quickly fade to black and this makes the audience more interested as they want to find out what happens. there are lots of establishing shots and the places they are set are usually busy streets of London and the underground, or rooms filled with technology. there are lots of two shots which establish relationships between characters and high and low angle shots which show who has authority, this is something that is very important in action films. towards the end if the trailer is becomes extremely faced based and there are lots of gun shots and explosions, due to our low budget we would not be able to do this but we would include the fast paced fight scenes towards the end of our trailer. the stereotypical car chase is also included and get this effect by having close ups on steering wheel and gear changing. we could also get someone to drive past us quickly as we film, we would not be able to use extremely expensive cars as it shows in the film but we could try and find the best possible car for this. the music becomes very fast towards the end and also becomes louder, as this happens there is no longer any conversation as this slows down the pace of the film, it focuses on gun shots and face paced music. as the clip ends it fades to black and the name of the film comes up in white writing. this makes it stand out and people will remember the name of the film so that they will go and see it.

Action Trailer Analysis - Taken

Taken genre is action. As the clip starts you are introduced to the main characters, they are shown to be happy and living the average persons life and celebrating her birthday.there is quick movement in the clip and a faint humming sound in the background. it is not very loud as its important to hear the narrative as it explains the basis of the film. there are fades to black and as the clip progresses it becomes faster paced. throughout the clip it shows flashes of clips and close ups of the characters face, this shows fear and anxiety in their faces which allows the audience to empathise with them and feel involved in the clip. the trailer also shows two clips at the same time this allows people to see the action going on in the trailer but also see people talking on the phone and explaining the plot, this is a very clever way of having both aspects included in the trailer and this is something that we could incorporate in ours. furthermore this makes it seem as though there is a lot going on and this conforms to an action film as nothing is slow paced and relaxed. the music changes through the clip, the humming sound stops and a piano is played, it becomes faster and louder which adds the chaos of the trailer. a phone conversation takes place and there are clips that are added in and faded to black throughout this phone conversation, we could use this in our trailer and could have a phone conversation going on while we show other fight scenes. so that it is more interesting we could also show two clips at the same time. there are only small amounts of fight scenes shown and this makes the audience more interested and want to go and see the film so they can find out what happens next. the small clips of fighting sometimes freeze and go to black and white, this makes it more interesting and we could use this in our trailer. the sounds in the background become louder as the clip progresses. explosions are shown in the trailer although this would be difficult for us to achieve at such a low budget. as the trailer ends it fades to black and then the name of the film 'Taken' appears, this is in black writing and therefore really stands out. as names of directors and producers appear there is heavy breathing in the background, this is disturbing to the audience and also conforms to the genre.

Analysis of Film Trailers -Snow White and the Huntsman

The genre of the film is action/adventure/drama. The unique selling point of the film is the fact it is a well know children's story that has been made into a modern film version, this grabs a wide audience. Another selling point is that there are many well known actors and actresses. These appeal to the target audience around the ages of 12 and over as the main actress Snow white is one of the main characters in the popular teen twilight films. Although the film would also appeal to adults and children as snow white is recognised as a children's book, due to this the film has been rated as a 12A which means that smaller children can go if accompanied by an adult, this increase the cinema ticket sell. There is faint music in the background of the film, typical of a adventure film cliche this is of a beating heart which becomes a much faster pace as the trailer builds tension and excitement for the audience. The main focus is on the special effects so the sounds of explosions is more overpowering than the music, this would be suitable for this genre of film as the audience that enjoys this genre would be impressed by the special effects and this is a selling point of the film. There are close ups of the different characters which gives the audience a chance to see the well known actors and actresses which will further sell the film. There are many long shots as there a fight scenes and this displays the special effects well. There are establishing shots which set the mood for the film, there are mystical woods which conform to the adventure genre. There are two shots as you see the different characters interact with each other, this lets the audiences connections between the different characters and the plot of the film. There are high and low angle shots as the main character is talking to one of the large animals in the film, this shows the audience that the animal is intimidating and this conforms to the stereotype of a drama film. There is tracking which makes the audience feel as though they are being carried away with the action. There are lots of jump cuts and this helps increase the pace of the trailer. The faster pace makes it more dramatic and exciting and this will really grab the audience. There is a deep voice that sounds haunting, a lot of the story is told through this and as the story is well known its makes the audience familiar and adds to the excitement. There are allot of special effects such as explosions this conforms to the genre of the film. There are lots of stunts that take place and are shown in the trailer so the audience are amazed and captured by the trailer. There are fades to black which builds tension an makes it feel more scary, this adds to the drama of the trailer. there are credits and inter titles that appear throughout the trailer and this builds further excitement and tension. The inter titles say 'this summer' which straight away shows the audience when they will be able to see the film, words such as 'evil', 'fights' and 'destiny' appear throughout which tells the audience more about the film and captures the target audience. The name of the film appears at the end, this means it will stay in peoples heads and they wont forget about the film.
