NEW MAGAZINE COVER

We have reviewed our magazine cover and have decided that the font used for 'Empire' was not the actual font and was therefore not conforming to other magazine covers. we have since changed that and we feel the colour of the text being red makes it stand out more and grab the audiences attention. We have also added some more text and a barcode to the right hand side as we feel this is more conventional of the magazine covers we have looked at.

Magazine Cover Update

we have updated out magazine cover and have used the actual title from empire magazine. we feel that this is far more conventional than the one that we originally had.

Evaluation Activity 4

How did you use Media technologies in the construction ad research, planning and evaluation stages?

we have taken pictures of us using some of the equipment involved in the making of our trailer. it is important that we know how to use the equipment so that filming can run smoothly. this would be very important in a high budget film as it need to be well planned out and every second filming is costing money and time that would have been planned out and needed to be kept to.

This is Charlotte with one of the tripods and camera that was used while filming. Charlotte learnt how to adjust the tripod which was important in order to achieve the shot types that we wanted. when we were filming in the park it was important that the camera remained at the same height even though we moved the position of it. This is important in order to keep the continuity of our trailer.

This is me with the tripod and camera. i learnt how to pause clips while filming and learnt how to upload the footage to the right format for the editing software we used. we came across some problems at first uploading the clips onto our editing software but overcame this by changing the format of the clips.

having the tripods were very important in ensuring we have smooth and steady shots. This made our trailer look more professional. There were times that we did not use the tripod but this is because we wanted a hand held camera effect to create an unsettled feel in our trailer.

We used adobe photoshop to make our film poster and magazine cover. At first we had difficulty with adjusting the size of an image but we soon learnt how to do it, we need to free transform the image and we were then able to adjust the size without loosing focus. we also had problems with inserting the text but keeping the background surrounding it. howver we over came this by learning how to select different layers and then able to delete the ones that we did not want. this then brought the text to the front but kept the background picture in the background. We feel this was a really good software for creating the magazine and poster as it allowed us to blend the different layers together and it also allowed us to select the exact colours we wanted to represent our trailer.

We used adobe movie maker for all the editing in our film. this worked really well and we were familiar with this software. this allowed us to adjust the sound which was important for creating more dramatic effect towards the end of our trailer as we allowed the sound to gradually build and increase with the pace of the trailer. we were also able to layer our sound which is something that cant be done with some other software that we though about using, such as 'windows movie maker' if we were not able to layer our sound then we could not include our voice over and the sound of the car moving starting and people talking at the same time as the music. this would have effected the flow of our trailer as the music would have to keep stopping, furthermore this would effect the building of tension and this is an inportant convention of action trailers. adoboe movie maker also allowed us to include fade to blacks which made our trailer more interesting and this conforms to other action trailer sthta we looked at. The fade to blacks help to build tension and make the clips flow better. we used a wide variety of locations and without the fade to blacks the changes in shots and location would have ment the trailer would not flow well.

We used youtube as a way of showing our target audience the trailer. it is easy to access and this made it easy to advertise to our audience. we also made it public for people to be able to write their own comments about our film and this is a brilliant way of getting audience feed back as a wide variety of ages use youtube and therefore we could get comments from all different types of people. youtubes main target audience is a siular target audience that we were basing our film at and therefore this is a brilliant way of advertising it.

We also used twitter and facebook as a way of communicating with our target audience. we would post tweets and facebook posts to update people what we were doing and would upload small clips of filming. this allowed the audience to build suspence and excitment over our film and this is very important in capturing an interest frm our target audience. Furthermore we were able to get ther opinion on the footage that we had done and this allowed us to develop or change anything that they felt was not interesting or succesful.

Evaluation Activity 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We showed a group of people our media trailer in order to see whether our trailer followed the conventions of other trailers, we also found out what they thought went well and what we could have improved on.

Positives

The audience felt that they were drawn in from the start and that the initial connection with the characters in the film was well established.
They liked that we had the clips at the beginning in the style of a home video and felt this was a good convention of action trailers and helped establish relationships between the characters.
The music contrasts with the clips but makes it more emotive and highlights the emotions the characters are experiencing.

The titles that were used were conventional of an action trailer as they stood out and went well with the music as there were fades to black. They titles were also conventional as they directly addressed the audience involving them in the trailer.
They liked the use of location as being filmed in London was more interesting and added to the dramatic feel of the trailer as a child being taken in London would make it harder to find them. There were also a variety of places which made it more interesting and the search more dramatic.

Negatives

From where we had recorded the videos we used at the beginning you could see the light which had reflected onto the TV into the corner which made it look less professional.
We had two characters fighting which had no place in the storyline as we had not introduced them or did not develop their places after.
At the end of one of the clips you can hear the camera being put down which could have been avoided if we had just clipped that little bit off.
Our voiceover explained the storyline however we did not develop this visually which we could have done more.

How is it like other trailers?

The use of the home video clips and inter titles throughout the clip help to build tension as this is a convention of action trailers. They felt the music used gave an insight into how the character felt and this is similar to other action trailers.
A variety of locations were used and this is typical of action trailers.

What we would do differently next time

The sound could have been better throughout, not just the clip of the camera being put down but we struggled with making the music quieter then louder again to go with the talking and at times this transition wasn't particularly smooth. We would also make sure that all characters we showed were relevant to the plot and developed throughout. We also could have included more footage of the kidnappers as this would have established the fight between them and the dad better.

We also uploaded the clip onto twitter and Facebook so that we could get further feedback from a larger variety of people. We also thought that the majority of people are aged 15 and over which is our target audience so it would be useful to put them on these social networking sites. Our feedback from the social networking sites was very positive. Everyone who watched the trailer said they would be interested in seeing the film but, similar to our other audience feedback they were confused by the fight scene as they didn't understand who the characters were. Everyone found the music and the home video style clips at the start very effective and we feel that this is a strong point in our trailer.

Evaluation Activity 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

we feel that the use of the male character as the main focus of the film shows his importance and dominance. this is conventional of action trailers as the male character is seen to be the one that 'saves the day' and has to look after the weak, vulnerable female character who is in need of help. for the magazine cover we have included smaller images of the female characters, this shows that the are not as important and not glorified in the same way as the male character. we have further highlighted the female innocence and vulnerability by including a high angle shot of the little girl and have clearly showed her hands tied up in the clip, this reinforces the fact that she is seen as helpless and the high angle shot makes her appear more vulnerable. The use of London not only links the poster and magazine cover together but it also grabs a wider audience (such as an American audience). it is also very conventional of action films to be set in large citites and this therefore grabd the attention of our target audience even more. our poster is based on the poster from 'Skyfall' as it is in black and white and the main character takes up most of the poster. we have put an emotive quote to the side of the male character which may be more appealing to a female audience as it is focussing on the relationships towards the characters, whereas the male audience may be more interested in fight scenes and gadgets, however we have dressed the male character in a smart suit and the fact that London is in the background highlights that this is an action film. By having the male character in a suit it will make the target audience see him as important and aspire to be like him, they are therefore more intreged in the film and will be more interested in going to see it.
